Brighton & Hove Albion under-23 forwards Aaron Connolly and Viktor Gyokeres have been nominated for August’s Premier League 2 Player of the Month Award.
After helping the Seagulls to a point in their opening game against Liverpool, Connolly came off the bench at the Emirates Stadium to fire the equalising goal against Arsenal in the closing stages.
The Irishman then turned provider in Albion’s following game, as he broke forward and squared for Gyokeres at the Lamex Stadium, and the Swede confidently lashed home in Albion’s 1-1 draw against Tottenham Hotspur.
Albion’s unbeaten run continued against Manchester City in emphatic fashion, as Simon Rusk’s team recorded an eye-catching 5-0 victory over the league leaders at the Broadfield Stadium.
Connolly and Gyokeres found themselves on the scoresheet again – the latter opened the scoring from the penalty spot, while Albion’s 18-year-old Irishman added two further goals after the break.
It was almost a hat-trick for Connolly in the closing moments, but his looping effort clipped the top of the crossbar and went behind, as the Seagulls recorded their first victory of the campaign.
The nine-man shortlist was decided by the league’s football development panel, after each Premier League 2 manager nominated the best performance by an opposing player in each of their matches throughout the month.
The winner will be announced at 10am on Monday 10th September.
